About Durham Cathedral
Durham Cathedral is one of the finest examples of Norman architecture in Europe and holds UNESCO World Heritage Site status alongside Durham Castle. Constructed in 1093, it has stood for over nine centuries as a centre of worship, heritage, and community life. The cathedral is famous for its massive Romanesque stone columns, rib-vaulted ceilings, and its dramatic position overlooking the River Wear. It is not only a place of deep spiritual significance but also a site of extraordinary historical and architectural importance.
Durham is the final resting place of two of northern England’s most revered saints—St Cuthbert and the Venerable Bede—making it a major pilgrimage site since the Middle Ages. Today, it remains a vibrant and active cathedral committed to the stewardship of its remarkable fabric and to the continuation of craft skills through heritage education.
This model celebrates the beauty and architectural significance of this remarkable building.
